"Chakrubs": Trashing Taboos Around Women’s Pleasure
2018 is almost over, and female masturbation is still a taboo. We read about sexual liberation, agency over our bodies, and the right to have sex with whomever we want, yet -absurdly enough- women exploring their own bodies continues to be a subject better left untouched.
When we came across Chakrubs, it felt like the perfect excuse to put this topic on the table. A project as beautiful inside and out as this one is just what’s needed to take the theme of sexual liberation to a whole new level.
As seen on their website, “Chakrubs are sex toys made from natural crystals that bring a sense of sacredness to your playtime… They are created with the intention of opening oneself up to the healing properties crystals provide”.
We know -believe us we know- it’s a lot to take in, but even if you’re skeptical about the metaphysical properties of these breathtaking objects, you don’t want to miss the mind-blowing chat we had with founder Vanessa Cuccia.
Vanessa is more than sure that the conversation on women’s self-pleasure is long overdue. “Sex has been one of the many vehicles used to take away our power as women. In our society, it’s natural to assume that pleasure is only relevant for men, and female bodies are something to be ashamed of”.
Vanessa has experienced first hand the consequences of a world where women and pleasure rarely go in the same sentence. Chakrubs began with the intention of shifting those beliefs.
“This project stemmed from a realization I had back in 2011. When I was in my early 20’s, I had just come out of a six-year relationship where I’d been emotionally and sexually abused. I realized a quarter of my life was done, and I didn’t enjoy sex. This was really disappointing because growing up I always thought it was something I would love. Being in this situation made me realize that I had to come back to myself on so many different levels”, exploring her sexuality was the ideal pathway.
Vanessa took a job at a renown sex toy store “that since day one was really accepting, non-judgmental, and sex-positive.” Around the same time, she started to explore the healing properties of crystals, and after realizing that these could be carved and made to be insertable, the birth of Chakrubs was the natural next step. “The name just kind of flew into my head -it was like destiny,” Cuccia says.
As expected, Vanessa has confronted a large number of critics. “I’ve dealt with a lot of pushback, not only because talking about masturbation in the mainstream is hard, but because I started this company well before crystals where really in the mainstream.” As too many female founders, Vanessa even received pushback from people who didn’t understand how she would start a business in the first place. But wow has she proved her doubters wrong. Chakrubs is thriving and -per the online reviews of these products- changing the lives of many women who have connected with their sexuality in ways they never even thought possible.
One of Chakrubs’ many objectives is to “help people -especially women- be more comfortable with sexuality, masturbation, and pleasure.” However, this conversation is about much more than female pleasure, and about so much more than orgasms. “This is about personal liberation, and sex is just a part of that. The root of sexual liberation is personal awareness, if you’re aware, open, and emotionally intelligent, sexual liberation will be a natural consequence.”
In Vanessa’s ideal world, elevated discussions about female pleasure would begin from a young age, “this would help neutralize the taboo and help people understand that sex and masturbation are sacred acts.”
Vanessa ended our chat with words that don’t deserve any sort of paraphrasing: “our bodies aren’t meant to feel stressed or tense, they’re meant to be relaxed and feel pleasure. When our energetic bodies are at ease, we are at ease, we’re open to healing, peace, love, and all of life's pleasures.” We honestly could not agree more. Bye! Off to get a Chakrub.
